PSY101 Reminders for Exam 4 (Chapters 8, 9, 11)

Reminders:

1. Forensic Development Extra Credit: For 5 points, write 3-4 sentences discussing the case study you received in class and what psychosocial stage (Erikson) your individual may have missed. What implications does this have for their adulthood? (If this interests you at all, enroll in Forensic Psychology, available at both the Red Mountain and Dobson & Southern Campuses!!!)

2. Be sure to send over any study guide questions you  have before the test (Friday for MWF students, Tuesday for TR students).

3. Take a look at the GENIE WILEY extra credit opportunity, pasted just a few posts below this!

4. Review the CRITICAL PERIODS chart. You'll probably see it on the test. Pay special attention to the first few weeks of development, and the development of the Central Nervous System!

We're VERY close to the end of the semester! Yikes!!!

Steve Jobs' iPad + Autism = Huge Leaps

Hi there guys and gals,

Check out this awesome video shared with me by one of your peers. There is a great bit in here regarding the implementation of iPad technology with individuals diagnosed with Autism! This really taps into our developmental chats!

Critical Periods

As discussed in class, here is a great visual representation of the critical periods within prenatal development!

Happy Sunday!

The Wild Child - "Genie" Extra Credit

*Update: The links have been updated, as it appears the previous host from the youtube.com videos was shut down. My apologies for the gap in availability. The new host is good to go!*

Hey guys and gals,

Thanks so much for your patience while I scoured the internet for the Genie videos. For *10* points of Extra Credit, watch the following videos and write a 1-2 page response. (This is a bit of a time investment. There are 6 parts to this NOVA episode. Each one is 7-8 minutes long.)

Nova Part 1
Nova Part 2
Nova Part 3
Nova Part 4
Nova Part 5
Nova Part 6

Be sure to address the following issues...

Do you think similar cases still occur?
Do you think with the improvement in technology we could better assist individuals like Genie?
Does Genie's case provide ample support for the presence of "critical periods?"
How might you compare the theories of Piaget and his contemporaries with the case of Genie?

For a more recent account of the Genie case, read this ABC article: Genie

Genderless Baby in Toronto

We'll be discussing sex and gender in Chapter 8. Check out this video...

Genderless Baby

What are your thoughts? Would you do the same thing with your child? Do you think the parents are smart to let their child develop into their own gender, or by keeping it a secret, are they setting their child up for larger problems?

PSY101 Students: Exam III This Week!

Oh yes, another announcement for PSY101 students...

Your third exam will be this Wednesday (Red Mountain) and Thursday (D&S). We will be covering...
- Learning
- Memory
- Thinking and Cognition

You should watch this GREAT video on Classical Conditioning as a refresher from Learning...

Ivan Pavlov

Pay special attention to the types of stimuli used to create a conditioned response.

Also, recall from the MEMORY video the types of challenges people with Superior Autobiographical Memory experience.

Movies in the PIRC Lab at Dobson & Southern Campus

Hey there guys and gals,

Attached below is the information for this Friday's movie in the PIRC, forwarded by the PIRC Advisor. CHECK IT OUT!! (Remember, this is an extra credit opportunity! Red Mountain Students... If you wanted to rent this video independently, then write a response on it, I'd be down to accept that...)

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.  The Women & Gender Studies committee has a series of lectures aound this topic this week in LB145. It has been suggested that we show a movie that deals with Domestic Violence, so we have chosen the Emmy & Golden Globe award winning Burning Bed. I have it on excellent authority that it is one of the best movies on DV.

Place: PIRC Lab, AD2 (@ Dobson & Southern)
Time: Noon, and 2p
Date: Friday, October 14th

Death & Dying Students

Happy Thursday!

Today, we will have the privilege of hearing three more personal stories. In addition to that, we will discuss the passing of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs. Pasted below is the link to the two articles I will reference in class, and a video worth watching... How might we juxtapose the passing of Steve Jobs and his commencement speech to the passing of Randy Pausch and his last lecture? Very intriguing concept!
