With that said, I'd like to encourage you to really be on top of your game. Plan ahead, just like we've discussed in class. Don't put off anything until tomorrow if you can do it today!

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Major Assignments for PSY156
- Your final paper is due on 12/6 or 12/8. (I'll accept it for full credit on either day.)

For ALL Psych Classes - check out your attendance to see if you're eligible to have your lowest score dropped (PSY101), or if  you're exempt from the final (PSY156). You should start organizing your extracurricular events if you'd like to make-up some absences.

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!

PSY101 Last Extra Credit Opportunity Available!!!

Hi all,

Here are the details you've been waiting for...

For 20 points of extra credit, you must submit a TWO PAGE paper (TYPED [I will not accept hand written], double spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman) highlighting and describing a pioneer in the field of Psychology.

You should spend one paragraph (your introduction) identifying the pioneer (Bandura, Freud, Skinner - DO NOT use one of these) and his/her major accomplishments.

In your second and third paragraphs (body), you should describe their major projects and/or findings (The Skinner Box, Psychoanalysis, Bobo Doll). You should DEFINITELY mention critiques and praise of this researcher's work. (Remember the basis of peer reviewed - empirically based research. We are nothing if our peers do not review our work and ask questions, point out weaknesses and points of improvement.)

In your fourth (and final) paragraph, you should describe further areas of research, even identifying where other pioneers have continued on in his or her footsteps.

This should take you no more than 30 minutes to draft and 30 minutes to edit and tweak. I want to see EVERYTHING you've learned this semester come to a peak in this SHORT 2 page paper. We've discussed so many researchers in the field, you should have no problem working through this.

I urge you to submit a quality product. Show me how the study of the mind and behavior has shaped your understanding.

This will be due in class with your final exam!

Questions? Holler!

PSY101, Exam 5 is APPROACHING!

Hey there guys and gals,

Exam 5 (Chapters 10, 12, and 13) is quickly approaching. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the Study Guide or Take Home Questions.

In addition, you SHOULD SERIOUSLY consider the chart posted below. You'll DEFINITELY see it on your test. ALSO, you SHOULD SERIOUSLY consider the following...

In two to three sentences,  compare two of the stages – how are they similar, how are they different? (E.g. “In the Ego Integrity vs. Despair stage developed by _____, individuals are facing the challenge of viewing their lives as satisfactory and worth living – focusing on personal achievements and successes. Alternatively, in the Maturity stage suggested by _____, individuals have reached a stage of sexual health and great pleasure, characterized as mutual respect between partners.”

Perhaps if you respnded to this question AT HOME and BROUGHT the answer in with you on test day, I'd ACCEPT IT AS EXTRA CREDIT... Think about it... :)

Happy Sunday!

The Wild Child - "Genie" Extra Credit

*Update: The links have been updated, as it appears the previous host from the youtube.com videos was shut down. My apologies for the gap in availability. The new host is good to go!*

Hey guys and gals,

Thanks so much for your patience while I scoured the internet for the Genie videos. For *10* points of Extra Credit, watch the following videos and write a 1-2 page response. (This is a bit of a time investment. There are 6 parts to this NOVA episode. Each one is 7-8 minutes long.)

Nova Part 1
Nova Part 2
Nova Part 3
Nova Part 4
Nova Part 5
Nova Part 6

Be sure to address the following issues...

Do you think similar cases still occur?
Do you think with the improvement in technology we could better assist individuals like Genie?
Does Genie's case provide ample support for the presence of "critical periods?"
How might you compare the theories of Piaget and his contemporaries with the case of Genie?

For a more recent account of the Genie case, read this ABC article: Genie

Genderless Baby in Toronto

We'll be discussing sex and gender in Chapter 8. Check out this video...

Genderless Baby

What are your thoughts? Would you do the same thing with your child? Do you think the parents are smart to let their child develop into their own gender, or by keeping it a secret, are they setting their child up for larger problems?

PSY101 Students: Exam III This Week!

Oh yes, another announcement for PSY101 students...

Your third exam will be this Wednesday (Red Mountain) and Thursday (D&S). We will be covering...
- Learning
- Memory
- Thinking and Cognition

You should watch this GREAT video on Classical Conditioning as a refresher from Learning...

Ivan Pavlov

Pay special attention to the types of stimuli used to create a conditioned response.

Also, recall from the MEMORY video the types of challenges people with Superior Autobiographical Memory experience.

Movies in the PIRC Lab at Dobson & Southern Campus

Hey there guys and gals,

Attached below is the information for this Friday's movie in the PIRC, forwarded by the PIRC Advisor. CHECK IT OUT!! (Remember, this is an extra credit opportunity! Red Mountain Students... If you wanted to rent this video independently, then write a response on it, I'd be down to accept that...)

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.  The Women & Gender Studies committee has a series of lectures aound this topic this week in LB145. It has been suggested that we show a movie that deals with Domestic Violence, so we have chosen the Emmy & Golden Globe award winning Burning Bed. I have it on excellent authority that it is one of the best movies on DV.

Place: PIRC Lab, AD2 (@ Dobson & Southern)
Time: Noon, and 2p
Date: Friday, October 14th

Death & Dying Students

Happy Thursday!

Today, we will have the privilege of hearing three more personal stories. In addition to that, we will discuss the passing of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs. Pasted below is the link to the two articles I will reference in class, and a video worth watching... How might we juxtapose the passing of Steve Jobs and his commencement speech to the passing of Randy Pausch and his last lecture? Very intriguing concept!

Hey guys and gals,

Next Tuesday is a BIG DAY. You have the following assignments due...

PSY101 - Extra Credit for UNIT III Exam (Chapters 5-7)

Hi Guys and Gals,

Attached below are a few videos regarding false confessions. We will be discussing the relevance of these in Chapter 6 - Memory. (We'll visit them AGAIN when we discuss Forensic Psychology at the end of the semester.)

For 10 points of extra credit...

First, watch these TWO videos regarding False Confessions and Eyewitness (Mis)Identification.

Then, read THIS article on the Innocence Project Website... (You should peruse the website a bit! VERY INTERESTING STUFF!!)

Write a 1 page summary (12 point font, double spaced) on your findings. Include a summary, questions, opinions, recommendations for research.

And be sure to answer these questions...

1. Do you think False Confessions are really possible?
2. Do the physiological implications of memory provide ample support for the presence of False Confessions?

For an EXTRA 3 points...

3. Jump on Google and research "The Central Park Jogger." Explain how the Central Park Jogger case relates to False Confessions & Eyewitness Mid-Identifications.

PSY 101 Multiple Choice Scores Up!

(via pinterest.com)

Hey guys and gals,

Your multiple choice scores are up for the Unit 1 Exam. You can see the column statistics... The class average fell in the 'D' range. But, not to worry! You will have the opportunity to make-up some of those points!

Starting on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 (for Red Mountain) and TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 (for Dobson & Southern)...

Visit the 2nd floor of the Desert Willow Building (for Red Mountain students) or the PIRC Tutor Lab (For Dobson & Southern Students) and make test corrections...

You'll have to present your graded scantron to a library attendant (Red Mountain) or a tutor (Dobson & Southern) and they'll giev you a copy of the test. Outline each mistake you made by writing the question and the correct response. The goal is to correct the information in your mind! :)

Submit your corrections on the next test day and get 5 points back on your test. (SERIOUSLY, that easy!)

Let me know if you have questions!

cheers,

lauren
